"Typically, the greater the risk on an investment, the greater the potential returns. Having some high-risk investments in your portfolio (particularly balanced with lower-risk investments like real estate) makes sense when you're young and have many years to make money on your investments, but as you grow closer to retirement less risk is preferable, so that you know the money will be there when you need it."
